I'm an Editor Who's Hard to Impress—17 Chic New Pieces That I'm Considering Adding to My Winter Capsule

If you know me (or have read even one of my shopping stories), you'll know I'm the definition of a picky shopper. It comes with the job, really. As a fashion editor, I spend my days scrolling through new arrivals, analysing fabric compositions and mentally categorising the pieces that actually deserve wardrobe space. My friends call it overthinking; I like to call it considered curation. Every season, I look for the small shifts that make my wardrobe feel new again, like an updated knit shape, a slightly slouchier jeans silhouette or a fresh layer that makes last year's staples feel current. Winter is my favourite time for this kind of styling refresh; it's the season of tactile textures, timeless outerwear and those pieces that quietly make everything else look more refined. And Free People is always a brand that that does this well.

Free People

I've always admired how Free People's pieces look effortlessly put-together without losing that sense of ease. The brand's knits are the kind you look forward to putting on, the denim fits like a dream and the accessories strike that sweet spot between trend-led and timeless.

I've been leaning on the current collection to fill the gaps in my winter wardrobe for pieces that make getting dressed on cold mornings (and the inevitable calendar of events ahead, festive parties I'm looking at you) a bit easier. There are also perfect choices for gifting season: pieces that look thoughtful, feel luxurious and, importantly, can be worn well beyond the festive season.

For me, I'm focusing on items that reflect what's trending now, like oversized knits, structured mules and clean denim, what will still feel relevant next year too and also those understated pieces that, when dressed with the right accessories, will be the perfect party outfit. From cosy knits to jeans with the perfect wide-leg cut and bags that look far more expensive than they are, below, you'll find the edit I'm considering for my carefully curated winter wardrobe.
