Swatch’s Super-Affordable New Watches Pay Tribute to Japan’s Past and Future
The Swiss brand has teamed up with Japanese illustrator Shinji Tsuchimochi.

Flying taxis, fireworks, lightning bolts and a healthy dose of Japanese pop culture—Swatch’s newest releases are not exactly your grandfather's wristwatch.
The Swiss brand has teamed up with Tokyo-born illustrator Shinji Tsuchimochi for two new additions to its Destination Art collection, which sees artists put their own spin on the places they call home.
First up is Expressway to the Future, which imagines a futuristic Tokyo where a taxi is making its way towards the moon. The dial is packed with colorful skyscrapers, while yellow lightening-bolt hands add to the wonderfully chaotic scene. The artwork even extends across the dark blue case and strap.

At 41mm, it's the larger of the two watches, powered by a quartz movement. It's also the harder one to get your hands on, with Japanese availability restricted to four Swatch stores.
If flying taxis aren't quite your thing, there's always Bridge to the Past. This one takes a more traditional approach, drawing inspiration from Edo-period Japan. Its dial depicts a Japanese summer evening, complete with a bridge and a sky full of fireworks.
The watch itself is smaller, measuring 34mm, with a transparent case and strap made from biosourced materials. Gold-colored hands complete the design, while a quartz movement keeps everything ticking along.
And the prices? Pretty reasonable, actually. Expressway to the Future comes in at ¥18,150 (roughly $115), while Bridge to the Past costs ¥16,500 (around $100). Both launched on October 16, although wider international availability hasn't been confirmed.
So, whether you're more interested in a trip to the moon or a trip back in time, Swatch has you covered.
