This £9 Product Is My Secret to a Long-Lasting, Salon-Like Manicure

One of my New Year's resolutions for 2026 is to save a bit of money. One way I plan to do that is to stop going to the salon every two weeks to try out the latest nail trends. I've been a gel manicure lover for years, mainly because it lasts significantly longer than regular nail polish. However, because of my new goal, I've started doing my nails at home, and I'm constantly searching for ways to make my manicure last longer and look a little more, well, professional.

After testing lots of products out, I've come to learn that a nail top coat is the simplest (and most affordable) way to make your at-home manicure look as good as possible, and keep it that way for as long as possible, too. Intrigued to know more? I spoke with nail expert and brand founder Leighton Denny MBE, all about how to get the most out of your top coat, and even included my edit of the best ones on the market. You're welcome.

What Is a Nail Top Coat?

"A nail top coat is the final seal for your manicure," explains Denny. "It’s a clear layer applied over your dry nail polish to create a protective coating. While the base coat helps polish adhere, the top coat acts as a shield for your nails. It generally provides superior gloss and a high-shine finish, enhancing the true colour of your polish."

Denny tells me that whilst top coats come in different finishes, choosing a quality formula can make all the difference. Ideally, you want something that will help to boost colour vibrancy and achieve a professional-looking finish.

How to Apply a Nail Top Coat

Once you've found your chosen top coat, application is key. "For best results, apply a thin coat and be sure to seal the tips by brushing right across the free edge. This caps the manicure and helps prevent chips," explains Denny.

Can a Top Coat Make Your Manicure Last Longer?

The big question is, can a top coat actually make your manicure last longer? According to Denny, it absolutely can. "It protects polish, keeps colour fresh and vibrant, prevents chipping, fading and yellowing, and it adds strength to fragile nails prone to breakage."

If you want a super shiny finish, I recommend this top coat from Leighton Denny. As the name suggests, it gives your nails a crystal-like effect, making them look as if you've just left the salon. It also creates a protective coating on the nail to lock your polish in and keep it looking fresh. Sometimes, I actually like to apply a thin coat of this a few days after doing my nails when they are looking a bit dull or lacklustre, as it immediately brings the colour back to life.

When I want something a bit more affordable, I reach for this top coat from Nails Inc. What I love about this formula is that it's enriched with a blend of blueberry extract and peptides to help nourish your nails and promote a stronger feel. My nails are feeling particularly weak at the moment, so I've been using this a lot while doing my mani at home. It's easy to apply, dries in under a minute and adds a glossy finish.
