This Lip Stain Is the French-Girl Beauty Product I've Been Missing

From donning a perfect red lip to pharmacy shelves that feel like Aladdin’s cave, French-girl beauty, with its insouciance and soft edges, has become part of the global beauty lexicon—elevated and understated all at once.

At the centre of its evolution is Violette Serrat, the French makeup artist-turned-founder behind Violette_FR. For years, I watched her YouTube tutorials, mesmerised by how she made blue graphic eyeliner or berry-stained lips feel achievable—not performative. Her aesthetic is effortless but precise. Perfectly undone in the chicest way. So when she launched her namesake beauty brand in 2021, I knew it wouldn’t be another vanity project. And it isn’t.

If you’re rolling your eyes at the thought of another lip product, I hear you. We have been inundated with formulas promising to be the best of both worlds—hydrating and long-lasting, shiny but not sticky—and rarely delivering. But these are different. Lip Nectars are clever, covetable and completely addictive. They’re what I imagine a grown-up living in Paris would wear: sheer but impactful, sensual but unfussy. It’s a kiss of colour that knows exactly where it’s going.

What makes Lip Nectar so special is that it redefines what a lip stain can be. A lot of the viral lip stains of TikTok fame are watery, very drying formulas that have your lips begging for moisture. Whereas Violette’s uses a cutting-edge oil-in-water emulsion. In simple terms, it means the pigment binds to your lips for lasting colour, while the moisture stays on the surface, creating a hydrating cocoon that leaves your lips feeling nourished hours later. There’s no tackiness, no peeling, no cracking—just soft, shiny colour that wears down like a dream. After applying, while the glossiness does fade, the stain itself easily lasts for over six hours. You will have to remove with intention when cleansing your face in the evening.

With four beautifully considered shades inspired by nature, I tested all of them and not a single one missed the mark. Each one adapts slightly to your tone, blossoming into its full colour moments after application. You can also adjust the intensity by applying in layers if you so choose.

When speaking with Violette personally at the launch, she said she loves to layer different colours to create a bespoke pout and even uses the deeper hues to somewhat “line” the lips, using the lighter shades in the centre for added dimension.

The Formula

It’s not just a swipe-and-go situation—it’s a full sensory experience. The texture feels rich, almost like jam (Violette’s inspiration, in fact), and the packaging—a tinted tube with a gold twist cap—is elegant enough to be mistaken for a fragrance bottle.

But more than that, they’re easy. I wore Dahlia Noir on a low-key date night and it stayed put through a non-alcoholic cocktail, some (glorious) pasta and a kiss goodbye.
